Wales in Eurovision

The Eurovision song contest is a competition held between members of the European Broadcasting Union, the EBU.

S4C is a fully incorporated and independent member of the EBU, so Wales "can" compete in the Eurovision Song Contest as an independent state if S4C wants Wales to!

Mark Evans has proved that he is "almost" good enough to rep the UK in the Eurovision, so that means that he must be good enough to represent Wales.

So come on S4C ask Mark to compete in Wales' name!

  1. Last night's winner deserves to be first, unfortunately on this occasion Mark somehow did not suit the song, which I didn't think much of anyway. Better luck next time Mark.

  2. I remember when Wales competed in Jeux Sans Frontieres in the early 1990s. Although the European broadcasters would often refer to us as "the Welsh team", they would also insist on calling us "Great Britain" in equal measure, much to the irritation of everyone at S4C. Indeed, European viewers only ever saw "GB" on the scoreboards, never "C".

A representative from S4C told Golwg that they'd asked repeatedly to be known as Wales and only Wales, but their appeals came to nothing as Wales wasn't a "member country" of the EBU.

The odd thing was that no-one seemed to pick up on the fact that Great Britain had always been allowed to compete in It's A Knockout, despite never being a "member country" either - the United Kingdom is.

  3. How anyone can bear to watch the Eastern-Eurovision Song Contest now that Sir Terry is not longer the star act beats me.

  5. Imagine if we won and the circus came to Cardiff... (That trip to America never looked so tempting...)

  6. Entertaining thought, but can you imagine how much it would cost S4C to host it if we actually won? Ireland winning thrice in a row nearly bankrupted RTÉ! :o)

  7. Mark Evans is a serious talent. Has a huge future ahead of him.

He would be wasted on Eurovision.

  8. The only thing I am unhappy about the Eurovision Song Contest is that the use of English, in the Eurovision Song Contest increases year by year.

As a native English speaker I think this is unfair!

It's certainly time to break the habit of "language imperialism", in the Eurovision Song Contest, and use a song, sung in Esperanto instead!

This is a serious suggestion, as you can see from the Esperanto music which is already available at http://www.vinilkosmo.com/?prs=listen or at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8837438938991452670

There's even cheesy Esperanto music available! See http://www.ipernity.com/home/56084
